100bc-1600 Fort Ancient State Memorial in Warren County marks a site occupied by two prehistoric Indian cultures. The Hopewell Indians built outstanding earthworks. The Fort Ancient Indians built a farming village.
1795 Treaty of Greeneville signed in Darke County. The treaty ended the Ohio and Indian Wars and opened the southern and eastern parts of Ohio to settlement. Native Americans retained lands in the northwest.
1795 As settlers poured into the region, Israel Ludlow laid out the towns of Hamilton and Dayton.
1840 William Henry Harrison from North Bend, Hamilton County, elected 9th President of the United States.
1888 Benjamin Harrison of North Bend, Hamilton County, elected 23rd President of the United States.
1896 Paul Lawrence Dunbar (1872-1905), African-American poet from Dayton, published Majors and Minors, one of his most important books of poetry. He was well known for his dialect poems and his essays protesting racial discrimination.
1903 Dayton bicycle makers Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first successful self-powered airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
