Although not the tallest of our trees, the Bur Oak is one of the most massive, especially when growing in open areas. A giant example that grows in Hamilton County has an average crown diameter of 116 feet. Its heavy twigs often are ridged with strips of cork. The tree prefers rich, moist but well-drained soils. In Ohio, it is found more frequently in open areas of the western part of the state than in forests. Occasionally it occurs on the Allegheny Plateau of eastern Ohio. The wood is similar to that of White Oak.
