Hedge Maple
(English Field Maple)
Acer campestre

This small to medium-size tree, a native of Europe and western Asia, was introduced into North America during early colonial times. Since then, several varieties have been developed. A champion specimen in Franklin County, Ohio was 37 feet tall and 44 feet across the crown in 1988. Because of its dense foliage Europeans commonly use it in clipped hedges, hence the common name. Landscapers use the Hedge Maple as a lawn tree, along streets, and in parks. This tree is very tolerant to heat and drought, and is relatively free of insect pests and diseases.
