Statewide Agencies

The State Seal

The Great Seal of Ohio

There are many statewide agencies, boards, and commissions that oversee the day-to-day work of state government. Some of those include the following:

The Department of Administrative Services exists to serve other Ohio agencies through helping to deliver mail and information technology, recruiting and training personnel, promoting equal access to the state workforce, procuring goods and services, overseeing state construction projects, spearheading electronic-government initiatives, providing data and voice transmissions, leasing and managing office space, processing payroll, printing publications and performing a variety of other services.

The Department of Development works with communities and businesses to promote economic opportunities to improve the profits and prosperity of Ohio’s citizens. The department acts in a support role to provide financial, informational, and technical assistance to those making an investment in Ohio’s future.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s mission is to protect the Ohio environment and public health by ensuring compliance with environmental laws and demonstrating leadership in environmental stewardship.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) owns and manages more than 470,000 acres of land, including 74 state parks, 20 state forests, 123 state nature preserves, and 96 wildlife areas. The department also has jurisdiction over more than 120,000 acres of inland waters; 7,000 miles of streams; 481 miles of Ohio River; and 2.25 million acres of Lake Erie. In addition, ODNR licenses all hunting, fishing, and watercraft in the state, oversees and permits all mineral extraction, monitors dam safety, and promotes recycling and litter prevention through grant programs in local communities.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio exists to assure all residential and business consumers access to adequate, safe and reliable utility services at fair prices, while facilitating an environment that provides competitive choices.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is charged with providing a world-class transportation system that links Ohio to a global economy while preserving the state’s unique character and enhancing its quality of life.
