Marietta established by the Ohio Company of
Associates under the leadership of Rufus Putnam. It was the first
permanent American settlement in the Northwest Territory and Ohio.

Arthur St. Clair appointed first Governor
of the Northwest Territory.

1836-1841
Locks and dams built on the Muskingum
River. Steamboats now traveled the river spurring development
of farms and factories.

1863
The Battle of Buffington Island fought in
Meigs County. A Union army defeated a force of Confederate cavalry
led by General John Hunt Morgan in the only significant Civil
War battle fought in Ohio.

Charles G. Dawes of Marietta served as
vice president under Calvin Coolidge.

1993
Nancy Putnam Hollister, former mayor of Marietta,
became the first woman elected Lieutenant Governor of Ohio.
