1794 Troops led by Gen. "Mad" Anthony Wayne defeated Chief Little Turtle at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, ending the Ohio and Indian Wars.
1813 Gen. William Henry Harrison's troops built Fort Meigs on the Maumee River in today's Wood County to protect northwest Ohio from British attack.
1814 New treaties signed following the War of 1812 confined Indians to several reservations in the Northwest part of the state. Most of this region was now open for settlement.
1876 Rutherford B. Hayes of Freemont, Sandusky County, was elected 19th President of the United States. His home is now an Ohio Historical Society museum.
1920 Warren G. Harding of Marion was elected 29th President of the United States. His home is now an Ohio Historical Society museum.
1969 Neil Armstrong of Wapakoneta, Auglaize County, was the first person to walk on the moon.
