1. It’s back to school time!  Let’s all learn something new online.

2.  Information is no longer locked in the pages of books.  It’s dispersed widely and freely.  So why are schools still using expensive textbooks?

3. Teachers and librarians are in constant competition with Google to provide their students with reliable sources.  How can you even begin to help teach the hyper-connected Google Generation?

4. There are 14.2 million computers available for classroom use in US schools as of the 2005-2006 school year (and that was two years ago).  That works out to at least one computer for every four students.

OPLIN 4cast Podcast #24: OPLIN Annual Report

Every August and September, OPLIN gathers some basic information from Ohio public libraries about their use of the Internet. This information is then combined with financial data from the end of our previous fiscal year, which runs from July through June, and this forms the basis of our Annual Report.

In this OPLIN 4cast Podcast, we’ll selectively focus on three sections of the Annual Report, namely: some data from our annual survey of libraries; some money matters; and our Support Center activities.

OPLIN 4cast Podcast #23: Traffic Shaping

Lately there have been several messages on the OPLINtech electronic mailing list concerning traffic shaping technology. Many libraries are finding that their Internet connections — which were just fine last year — are overloaded this year, and are looking to traffic shaping as a possible solution to this problem. We thought it might be a good idea to talk a little about this technology and how it might be used by a library.
